The menu bar is where the small, good Mac software lives, and it is the one place nobody catalogues. The App Store buries it under phone apps, Product Hunt forgets it in a day, and a hundred of these are one person's weekend project with no marketing behind it at all. This site is a list of them, kept by hand.
Every listing links to the developer's own site. Nothing is hosted here, nothing is resold, and no download passes through this site: you go straight to the person who made the thing.
How an app gets listed
Somebody sends the form, and a person reads it. That is the whole process. There is no queue you can pay to skip and no automatic import from anywhere, which is slow and is why the descriptions read like somebody wrote them.
A submission can be declined, usually with a reason. Copy gets edited for length and house style. What the app does never gets edited.
What it costs
Nothing. Listing is free, and position has never been for sale: no developer has paid to appear higher, to appear at all, or to keep a competitor out. Nothing on this site takes a payment today.
If that changes, anything paid for will be marked as paid for on the listing itself, in a way you cannot miss. Not a line at the bottom of a page.
Why the numbers are public
A directory asking developers to hand over a launch should be willing to say how much traffic it actually has, so the numbers page is open to everybody: visitors, what people searched for, and how many of them went on to a developer's site. Developer pages are ordered by that last number, because a click is somebody leaving for the developer, which is the thing this site is for.
There is no advertising here and no ad network, so nothing is measured in order to sell it. Privacy sets out exactly what is stored, written from the database schema rather than from a template.
Who runs it
Mehmet Ali Demir, who also makes menu bar apps, which is how the gap got noticed. Those listings are held to the same rules as everybody else's and are not placed above them.
